UNCG Announces Spartan Club Priority Point System 08-24-2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Spartan Club announced the implementation of a Priority Points System Friday to create a fair and equitable process for handling future season ticket sales and postseason/road game ticket sales for men’s and women’s basketball.

“We felt it was important to have a system in place to reward our loyal and generous donors and season ticket holders when special moments and events occur in our program,” Director of Athletics Kim Record said. “While the Spartan Club featured a priority point system in the 1980’s, we feel this current version will serve both our current supporters and new friends and fans of UNCG very well.”
The priority point system will not be used until fiscal year 2014 (beginning July 1, 2013) to ensure time to work through any issues or questions Spartan Club members or season ticket holders have on the new system. All gifts made this year will be added to point totals for 2014. Season ticket holders during the 2012-13 basketball season will have the right to retain the same seats at least through the 2014-15 season. The point system will be used to establish an order for those who want to improve their seat location or for new season ticket purchasers in 2013-14.
Current Spartan Club members and season tickets holders from the 2011-12 basketball season will receive a personalized point statement that shows how points are calculated and includes an individual point total and overall rank.  In addition, anyone who joins the Spartan Club this year (prior to June 30, 2013) or becomes a new season ticket holder will have an account activated in the point system.
One area calculated as part of the point system is consecutive years of giving to UNCG Athletics. As a special opportunity only available through June 30, 2013, individuals can earn additional points by buying back years in which they did not make a gift to the Spartan Club. The cost to buy back a missed year is $100 per year you buy back. The amount to buy back missed years of giving needs to be in addition to the amount of your gift to the Spartan Club Athletic Scholarship Fund in fiscal year 2012 as shown on your statement.  New members can also buy back missed years of giving once they make an initial gift of $100 to the Spartan Club.
Any Spartan Club members or season tickets holders that have any questions on the priority points system or believe an adjustment to their statement needs to be made, can contact the Spartan Club offices at (336) 334-3576.

UNCG Spartan Club Priority Point System Question and Answers

Q.  What is the Spartan Club Priority Point System
A.  The Spartan Club will use the Priority Point System to assign benefits among donors and season ticket holders using the chart 2 questions below to calculate point totals. The goal is to offer fair access to high-demand/low-supply benefits, such as post-season tickets and road games.  The Priority Point System will also be used to establish an order for those who want to improve their seat location beginning in the 2013-14 season and for prioritizing seat selection for new season ticket purchasers for the 2013-14 season. Anyone who purchases season tickets in 2012-13 will have the right to retain their seats through the completion of the 2014-15 season.

Q. Why does UNCG need a point system?
A. Currently, there is no system in place for the Spartan Club to allocating benefits that exist in limited quantities related to the men’s and women’s basketball programs in a fair and equitable manner to both those who have been loyal and generous to UNCG Athletics through the years and new fans who want to become involved with our program.  The Priority Point System will provide a means for the Spartan Club to accomplish this.

Q. Has UNCG Athletics ever used a Priority Point System before?
. Yes, but not one that was used consistently through the years.  One of the very first Spartan Club brochures in 1987 featured details of a points system, but it was never fully utilized.

Q.  How are points calculated?
A. Points are calculated using the chart below:

1 - FY 12 Spartan Club Athletic Scholarship Fund Gift (10 points per $100)
2 - Consecutive Years of Giving to Athletics – All areas (6 points per year)
3 - Season Ticket Holder Previous Year – 2011-12 Season (3 points per season ticket)
*4 - Consecutive Years Being Season Ticket Holder at Coliseum (2 points per year)
^5 - Fleming Gym Season Ticket Holder (10 points if ever a season ticket holder)
6 - Lifetime Giving to Athletics – All areas dating to 1986 (2 points per $100)
#7 - UNCG Bonus Points – Former Student-Athlete (50); Alumni (25); Faculty/Staff (25):

Calculation Notes:

*UNCG started playing at the Greensboro Coliseum in 2009-10, maximum years is 3
^ 10 points will be awarded to anyone who ever purchased a season ticket for a men’s basketball season at Fleming Gym
# Only one of these three bonuses will be awarded even if you and/or your spouse fall into more than one of the three categories. Also applies to those faculty and staff members that retired from UNCG.

Q. I have been a season ticket holder in the past but I did not receive a point statement in the mail.  How do I know if I have an active points account/ranking?
A. Only basketball season tickets holders from the 2011-2012 season and those who were members of the Spartan Club ($100 level and above to the Athletic Scholarship Fund) during fiscal year 2012 (July, 1 2011 to June 30, 2012) have an active account in the point system.  Once you purchase season tickets or join the Spartan Club in the current year, your account then becomes active in the point system.

Q. I’ve been a season ticket holder for a number of years, but have never contributed to UNCG Athletics. Why should I contribute now?
. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, so does the challenge of competing. UNCG Athletics is a 17-sport program with more than 200 student-athletes, and our annual scholarship expense has increased more than 65% since 2010 due to the elimination of out-of-state tuition waivers and general University tuition increases.  Support from student fees and season tickets sales alone do not allow us to fully meet our operational and scholarship needs to provide the best experience possible for our student-athletes. Hence, UNCG Athletics must increase its base of support as well as its annual revenue.

QI want to increase my number of consecutive years of giving, how do I do that?
. The Spartan Club is offering the opportunity for donors to buy back missed years of giving for $100 for each year missed dating back to 1986.  This special opportunity will only be available through June 30, 2013.  The amount to buy back missed years of giving needs to be in addition to the amount of your Fiscal Year 2012 (July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012) Spartan Club Athletic Scholarship Fund gift amount (see example below).  If you need a point statement to see which years of giving you are missing, please contact the Spartan Club Office at 336-334-3576.

  •  Fiscal Year 2012 Spartan Club Athletic Scholarship Fund Gift Amount: $500
  • Years of Giving to UNCG Athletics:  2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
  • Current Consecutive Year Total is 5 (2008 to 2012).  Missed years of giving are 2006 and 2007.
  • Total gift amount by June 30, 2013 to buy back those 2 missed years is $500 (Fiscal Year 12 Gift Amount) + $200 (2 years of missed giving at $100 each) = $700 Total.  Consecutive Years of giving total would go from 5 to 11.
Q.  How can I improve my Priority Point total?
A. Making a first-time gift to the Spartan Club Athletic Scholarship Fund or increasing your Scholarship Fund contribution is the best way to increase your point total. You can also increase your point total by buying back missed years of giving.  See example in previous question for more details.  The deadline for Scholarship Fund gifts to count towards the Priority Point System is June 30th each year.

Q.  Can I calculate my own Priority Point total?
A. Not yet, but a new online system will be launched later this year where this feature will be available.

Q.  I received my Point Statement in the mail and the calculations don’t seem accurate, what can I do?
A. Please contact the Spartan Club at 336-334-3576.  We have made every attempt to accurately reflect the giving and ticket purchasing history of our loyal fans and friends, but we understand that some mistakes may have been made.  This is why we won’t be fully using the Priority Point System until 2013-14.  We wanted to give appropriate time to allow people to ask questions and adjust their giving/ticket purchases to increase their point totals.

Q.  Do I have to contribute to the Spartan Club in order to purchase season tickets?

No, season tickets are available for non-donors in the Greensboro Coliseum except for courtside seats and riser section seating in sections 124, 125 and 126.  A minimum gift of $1,000 is required for the purchase of courtside seats and a minimum gift of $250 is required for the purchase of riser sections seats in section 124, 125 and 126.  However, donations to the Spartan Club will improve your chances to be able to purchase tickets to post-season & road games.

Q.  How often will seats at the Greensboro Coliseum be reallocated?

As long as an individual has purchased season tickets for the 2012-13 year they will have the right to retain those seats at least through the completion of 2014-15 season, at which time the priority point system will be re-evaluated.

Q.  How can I improve my seats at the Greensboro Coliseum?
A.  A ticket holder may request improved seating but these requests will be filled in priority order based on your rank in the Spartan Club Priority Point System and provided that better seats are available.  This system will be used for the first time for the 2013-14 basketball season.

Q.  What if I have the same number of points as another Spartan fan?
A.  Ties will be broken using the following criteria: amount of athletic scholarship fund gift in previous year, lifetime giving to athletics, number of consecutive years of giving to athletics, total number of season tickets purchased (since the 2009-2010 season).

Q.  To what extent will the Priority Point System assist me in obtaining away game and postseason tickets?
. The opportunity to purchase away-game and postseason tickets will be based upon your rank in the Priority Point System and availability.
