OAKLAND, CA – UNC Greensboro forward Matt Smith was named to the 11-man Freshman All-American Team by Soccer America.
Smith, a native of Mebane, NC, was named the 2004 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. Smith became the second consecutive Spartan to earn this honor. Scott Jones received the honor in 2003. He finished the 2004 season second on the team in scoring with 23 points (9 g, 5 a) which was tops among all SoCon freshmen. Smith recorded two game-winning goals on the season, against nationally-ranked Wake Forest and Davidson. Last month, Smith was also selected to College Soccer News’ All-Freshman Team.
Smith helped guide the Spartans to a 19-3-1 record this season, including the regular season Southern Conference title. UNCG earned a No.8 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament and advanced to the third round before losing in over time to UC Santa Barbara, 1-0.
