GREENSBORO, N.C. - In a game that saw six lead changes over the course of the night, UNCG women's basketball was forced to take a loss in their season opener, falling to the visiting Richmond Spiders by a final of 70-62. Nadine Soliman and Aja Boyd each recorded double-doubles in the loss, with the latter putting up a game-high 20 points overall.
Jumping out to a 13-4 lead in the opening five minutes, the Spartans saw that advantage diminish to three points before the first period buzzer, despite shooting 40 percent from the floor in the opening frame.
Starting forward Aja Boyd would add 10 points in the second period alone to bring her total to 16 before the half, keeping her team out in front by a margin of 36-33 over the first 20 minutes. The redshirt-junior went 7-for-8 with a pair of free throws in the first half, while pulling down four boards in 17 minutes on the floor.
A 10-4 run from the Spiders would but the Spartans behind the eight-ball early in the third period, but back-to-back buckets from Boyd put the home side back out in front 46-45. Richmond went on to retake the lead in the final four minutes of the term however, scoring nine, on four buckets in the paint and a trip to the line.
The two sides combined for seven field goals in the final 10 minutes, as the Spartans' Te'ja Twitty scored her fourth field goal of the night to tie things at 54 apiece midway through the fourth. While Nadine Soliman added seven points down the stretch to finish the night with 15, the Spiders would ultimately hold off their hosts, making seven of their last 10 shots from the charity stripe to finish the evening as 70-62 favorites.
