GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball (3-4) looks to bounce back by co-hosting the Spartan-Aggie Invitational this weekend in Fleming Gymnasium.
The Spartans start the weekend with Winthrop (1-6) Friday at 6 p.m., before hosting two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams Saturday with Delaware State (0-8) at noon and in-town rival North Carolina A&T (3-2) at 7 p.m. All three matches can be seen on SoCon Digital Network.
This season, UNCG is 1-0 against the MEAC with a 3-0 sweep against University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Sept. 1 and are 1-1 in Fleming Gym this season with a 3-2 win over Air Force and a 3-0 loss to University of Maryland to start the season.
Leading the way for the Spartans are sophomore outside hitter Holly Behrends with 3.21 kills per set and junior outside hitter Emily Keilen with 3.14 kills per set, while setter senior Allison Penner leads the team with 6.21 assists per set and setter sophomore Giana Rasmussen is averaging 4.24 assists.
On the defensive side, libero Christina Gregory leads the team with 4.58 digs per set, while Behrends is averaging 2.29 digs per set. Junior middle blocker Lauren Robeck leads the team with 0.70 blocks per set and junior middle blocker Mikaela Weidmann is averaging 0.68 blocks per set.
The last time out, the Spartans fell at Duke 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 16-25) Tuesday night. Behrends led the team with 11 kills, Robeck added 10 kills with a .600 hitting percentage and Penner and Rasmussen each recorded 15 assists. Gregory led the team with 14 digs and Behrends nearly recorded a double-double by adding nine digs.
Winthrop lost the first six matches of its season but bounced back the last time out with a 3-2 win over North Florida. The Eagles are led by Lourdes Rosario with 2.71 kills per set, Siani Yamaguchi with 9.04 assists per set and Carlie Skelton with 4.25 digs per set.
Delaware State is looking for its first win, and seven of its eight matches have been 3-0 sweeps. The Hornets are led by Devin Ruble with 1.88 kills per set, Milexa Cardona with 5.44 assists per set and Leimaluhia Taula with 3.92 digs per set.
North Carolina A&T started the season 3-0 but has lost the last two matches. The Aggies are led by Lily Walton with 2.22 kills per set, Edie Brewer with 8.44 assists per set and Andrea Laboy-Rivera with 4.61 digs per set.
The Spartans return to action to face High Point Friday at 6 p.m. in High Point, N.C. and then home to play Kansas at 10:30 a.m. and Elon at 7 p.m. Saturday in the final nonconference matches of the season.
