ADVANCE, N.C. – UNCG men’s golfer Nick Lyerly and alum Jake McGlone were one of five golfers that claimed a spot for the 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday in the two-day Oak Valley Sectional at the par-72, 7,007-yard Oak Valley Golf Club. McGlone finished second at 9-under-par 135 (65-70) while Lyerly finished in a tie for third place at 7-under 137 (73-64).
The U.S. Amateur Championship will be played at Pebble Beach (California) Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course from Aug. 13-19. The first two days will consist of one round each of stroke play. The 312-golfer field will be weeded down to the round of 64 with match play on the third day. Match play will follow for the next day with the rounds of 32 and 16. After quarterfinal and semifinal matches, the 36-hole championship match will play out on the last day. FS1 will provide coverage from Aug. 15-17, and Fox will take over for the last two days.
McGlone’s 7-under 65 in the first round was the third-best round score of the sectional. He birdied the first and third holes, notched an eagle in between, didn’t record a bogey or worse and then birdied three of the last five holes. In the second round he shot 1-under 35 on both the back and front nine.
Lyerly responded from a 1-over par in the first round by recording the second-best round score at 8-under 64. Getting a par or better for all 18 holes, he birdied three of the first five holes. He improved on the back nine with a five-under 31 that featured birdies on three of the first four holes.
Lyerly won the Eastern Amateur on Sunday with a 16-under-par 264 (63-65-67-69) at the par-70 Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club and is the third Spartan to win an amateur tournament over the summer. Brice Hendrix claimed the Palmetto Amateur on June 9, and Jonathan Brightwell took home the Rice Planters Amateur on June 23.
McGlone was an All-Southern Conference golfer for the Spartans in 2015-16 and advanced to the NCAA Franklin Regional as an individual that season.
