GREENSBORO, N.C. – Phillip Sanderson will be joining Spartan baseball for the upcoming 2019 season. Before he gets to Greensboro, Sanderson and his Chipola College team will head to Grand Junction, Colorado for an appearance at the NJCAA World Series after winning the NJCAA Region VII/Florida College System Athletic Association (FCSAA) championship. Sanderson threw a complete game as Chipola defeated Hillsborough 5-0 in the title game.
This is Sanderson’s second complete game of the tournament. In the second game of the FCSAA tournament, Chipola earned a 4-1 victory. Sanderson threw all nine innings, scattering seven hits, one earned run and struck out nine hitters to keep the Indians on the winner’s side of the bracket. In the championship against Hillsborough, Sanderson threw the full nine innings; scattering three hits and punched out six hitters. For his efforts, Sanderson was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
Sanderson, a redshirt freshman, has started 16 games for Chipola this season, earning a 10-2 mark in 93.2 innings of work. He’s earned a 2.88 ERA with 76 strikeouts.
Sanderson and the Indians will next head to Grand Junction for the NJCAA College World Series for the second time in as many years.
