GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s basketball head coach Trina Patterson has announced the signing of Areon Laurent for the 2018-19 season. Laurent is a native of North Carolina, playing her prep career at Jacksonville High under head coach Monique Gidrey where she led the Cardinals to the NCHSAA 3-A Championship game, the first in school history. For her efforts this season, Laurent was named Player of the Year from The Jacksonville Daily News.
“We are pleased to welcome Areon to our Spartan basketball program.” Head coach Trina Patterson said, “Areon is a highly skilled player, she demonstrates a high basketball IQ and is a leader. Areon is an athletic scorer who is not only a 3-point shooter and driver, but also has the ability to score with a mid-range shot. She will be able to transfer her skills to the college game quickly.”
During her senior season at Jacksonville High, Laurent averaged 16.6 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, 2.8 steals per game and 2.6 assists per game. She was a 44-percent shooter from the floor and hit 58 3-pointers to lead her team. Over the last three seasons, Laurent and the Cardinals have won 20 or more games and she was named her team’s Most Valuable Player. She also earned MVP honors at the Dixon Christmas Classics. Laurent is a four-time all-district honoree and was named second team all-state. During her AAU time, she competed with the Carolina Flames under coach Arne Morris for three seasons. The Carolina Flames are the same AAU club that assistant coach Asia Williams played for.
Laurent is the daughter of Rubin Laurent and Theresa Gibbs and plans on majoring in criminology at UNCG.
