Softball Tops Elon at Home 5-3
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (14-6) beat the Elon Phoenix (12-7) 5-3 in the first of a three-game weekend series on Friday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. Four runs, all with two outs, in the first inning by the Spartans proved to be enough for the victory.
Leadoff hitter Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) started things with a walk and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley). Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) gave UNCG runners on the corners with a single to right field, and with two outs Jasmine Palmer (Cander, N.C./ Florida State) knocked in the first run with a single to left field. Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) loaded the bases with a walk, and Kayleigh Willis (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) singled through the left side to bring home Sholtes and Palmer. Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) then beat out a throw from the second baseman for a RBI-single.
Elon scored the game’s first run. After a runner reached third base following a double down the left field line and a wild pitch, a throwing error on a stolen base attempt allowed the run to be scored.
The Phoenix added another run in the second inning on a RBI-single to center field.
Elon then cut its deficit to one run with a leadoff home run to left field in the sixth inning.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the same inning. Willis was hit by a pitch to start, and McClaskey moved over pinch-runner Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) to third following a throwing error on the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt. Becca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) singled to the third baseman, and pinch-hitter Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) drew a walk on four-straight balls for the run.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) improved to 7-2 with her third complete game of the season. Bazonski gave up seven hits, three runs and five walks with eight strikeouts.
Palmer and Kale both went 2-3 at the plate, and Kale was the only Spartan to record an extra-base hit with a double in the fourth inning.
UNCG will head to Elon on Saturday to finish out the series with a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
