SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG men’s and women’s track opens their outdoor seasons with the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNCW on Friday and Saturday. This will the sixth-straight year the Spartans have ran in the invitational.
UNCG returns to action following a one-week break following the conclusion to the indoor season at the Southern Conference Championships. Several Spartans had standout performances.
Juan Rodriguez qualified for the 800-meter-race finals with a time of 1:55.74 that was just fourth-hundredths off his personal record for the second fastest time of the day. He then placed eighth in the finals with a time of 1:57.77, earning a point for the men’s team.
In the 4,000-distance medley relay, UNCG’s team of Logan Sprinkle (King, N.C./West Stokes), Colyn Todd (New Castle, Del./Roman Catholic), Weston Clayton (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) and William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) turned in a time of 11:11.80 for eighth place.
The 4x400 men’s relay team of Clayton, Preston Gaines, Jonathan Timothy (Greenville, N.C.) and Sandin earned two points for the team. Gaines (400-meter) and Rodriguez (800-meter) were award all-freshmen in their respective events.
On the women’s side Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) finished fifth in the women’s 3,000-meter with a time of 10:13.89. The race was just second in the event in Delaney’s career. In the 5,000-meter, she finished ninth with a time of 17:55.57, and Lefler McManus set a personal record at 18:54.28.
