SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG softball’s Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) was named Southern Conference Player of the Month, the leagued announced Thursday afternoon. Sholtes played a pivotal role in the Spartans' 11-3 record in the month of February.
In the month of February Sholtes led the SoCon in batting average (.441), slugging percentage (.912), on-base percentage (.587), total bases (31), chances (111) and putouts (108). Her OPS (1.499) is .225 higher than the second-best average in the league. She also ranked second in homers (four) and walks (nine), tied for second in runs (13) and fielding double plays (three), tied for fourth in doubles (four) and hit by pitches (three) and tied for sixth in hits (15). She reached base in all but one game and had two hits or two walks in six games. Playing first base for every inning in the month, she had just one error with two assists and 108 putouts.
Sholtes earned the first conference player of the week honors after going 6-9 with three home runs and five walks in the Kickin’ Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina for a .786 on base percentage and 1.667 slugging percentage. In the season-opening run-rule win against Presbyterian, she went 2-2, all homers, with two walks, three runs and five RBI. She carried her power into the next game, hitting a solo-shot in her first at-bat against the host school and then drawing walks in her next two plate appearances. Against Seton Hall on Feb. 23, she went 2-3 with a home run and double, three runs, two RBIs and a walk.
UNCG will play Elon in a three-game weekend series, hosting one game on Friday at 3 p.m. and then playing a doubleheader on the road the following day starting at 1 p.m.
