SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) and Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) swept the Southern Conference’s monthly awards for their performances during the month of February. This is the first monthly honor for both Trejo and Wantz. Trejo earned the Player of the Month award after hitting at a .483 (14-for-29) average with 10 RBI and eight runs scored. Wantz earned a 2-0 record and two saves as he made five appearances out of the bullpen to earn Pitcher of the Month honors.
Trejo started all eight games in the month of February, recording at least one hit in every contest. He started the season off with four RBI in back-to-back games against Appalachian State. Against Tennessee, he stole two bases in the finale as UNCG earned the victory. He scored two runs on three occasions, in the season opener against App State, the midweek against Oakland and the midweek contest at Wake Forest as part of a 4-for-5 day. He went for two doubles in the victory over Wake Forest and added a triple against Oakland. Trejo had the long ball going early as he hit a pair of home runs in the first two games of the season. He drove in 10 runs during the month and currently leads UNCG in RBI.
Wantz made five appearances in eight games during the month. He earned a 0.82 ERA in 11.0 innings, allowing just one earned run. He threw multiple innings in all five outings, striking out five hitters in 2.2 innings of work twice. He made appearances in the first two games of the season against App State. He worked 2.1 innings and struck out two hitters to earn UNCG’s first win of the season. He followed that appearance with another 2.2 innings of work and another win in the second game against the Mountaineers. Wantz closed out the series against Tennessee, helping UNCG earn a 3-2 victory. During that outing he went 2.2 innings, struck out five hitters and allowed just one earned run to earn his first save. He closed the month out with a 2.0 inning save at Wake Forest. He entered the game with UNCG leading 8-5 and didn’t allow a base runner as he struck out three hitters.
Trejo and Wantz are back in action tomorrow evening as the Spartans open a three-game series against the Lafayette Leopards at 4 p.m.
