Baseball Hits the Road for a Pair of Midweek Contests

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball is back in action with a pair of midweek contests Tuesday and Wednesday. The Spartans went 3-1 last week, taking the midweek game at Wake Forest before winning the series over the 2017 MAAC Champion, Marist. UNCG will take on the Winthrop Eagles Tuesday night before heading to face the former Southern Conference rival, Elon Phoenix Wednesday.

Winthrop leads the all-time series with the Spartans, 10-7. The last meeting between the two schools came in the 1997 Big South Tournament, as UNCG earned a 4-3 win over the Eagles. The Spartans have won the last four-straight meetings, having swept the three-game set prior to the tournament in 1997.

UNCG lags farther behind in the all-time series with Elon, 34-16. The Spartans made up ground recently, winning three of the last four meetings, including both midweek contests last season.

The Spartans enter this weekend’s series after dropping the series finale with Marist Sunday afternoon. UNCG is 2-0 in midweek games this season, defeating Oakland and Wake Forest.

UNCG will send redshirt sophomore Jake Mayhew (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) to the hill Tuesday. Mayhew has started the two other midweek games, as UNCG is 2-0 when he takes the mound. The right-hander has a 1-0 record in 6.1 innings of work. He’s struck out five hitters and holds opponents to a .227 average against. Dan Loats (Eden Prairie, Minn./NIACC) is scheduled to make his first start Wednesday at Elon. The senior has made three bullpen appearances, logging 3.2 innings and striking out three hitters.

The Spartan offense ranks eighth nationally with a .342 team batting average and score 7.5 runs per game. Junior outfield Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) is hitting at a .488 (20-for-41) clip with at least one hit in all 11 games. He’s driven in a team-high 14 runs and gone for extra bases 10 times in his 20 hits.

Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) hits in the third spot in the lineup, hitting at a .364 average and has driven in 11 runs. He’s hit four doubles and a triple to go with a home run. Dillon Stewart (Coats, N.C./Brunswick CC) is third on the team with 10 RBI and leads the team with three home runs.

UNCG has three relievers who have worked in 11 or more innings. Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) has made seven appearances, earning a 1.29 ERA and has struck out 19 hitters. He’s earned a 2-0 record with three saves, each leading the team. Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) has made six appearances, earning a 2.13 ERA and a 2-1 record. Maynard has struck out 14 hitters and allowed just two extra base hits. Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Gardner-Webb) has logged seven appearances, earning a 3.27 ERA and a save. In 11.0 innings, he’s allowed seven hits and opponents are hitting just .206 against him. He also leads the pitching staff by inducing three double plays.

The 2017 Big South Regular Season Champion Winthrop, went 34-24 last season and 17-7 in Big South play. This year, Winthrop enters at 4-8, dropping two of three games last weekend to Kent State at home. The Eagles took the Friday game, 8-2 before dropping Saturday and Sunday, 9-1, 7-5. Cody Whitten got the ball to start Winthrop’s last midweek contest at Clemson. Whitten only went one inning before giving way to Daniel Willcutt. Willcutt logged 4.2 innings and struck out four hitters as Winthrop fell 9-8. The Winthrop pitching staff has a 5.31 team ERA.

The Eagle offense hits at a .242 clip, led by Alex Raines. Raines hits at a .300 (9-for-30) average with one extra base hit. Tyler Halstead leads the team with nine RBI while hitting at a .265 (9-for-34) average. Matthew Mulkey leads Winthrop with a pair of home runs to go with eight RBI. He’s also stolen three bases and drawn five walks. Mitch Spries has started all 12 games and leads is a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts.

Elon enters at 5-7, taking a series at Georgia Southern over the weekend. All three games were tight as Elon outscored Georgia Southern 11-9 on the weekend. Elon is 2-1 in midweek games this season, with all three being decided by one run. Elon defeated Radford, 2-1 to start the midweek season before falling at home to Kansas State, 8-7. Last week, the Phoenix hosted Liberty and earned a 4-3 victory.

Ryan Conroy got the start for Elon against Liberty. Last week, Conroy went 6.0 innings, scattering four hits, two runs; one earned and struck out five hitters on 96 pitches. The junior right-hander faced UNCG two seasons ago as he started the first midweek in the 2016 season in Greensboro. UNCG earned a 7-3 win with Conroy suffering the loss. He gave up six runs; none earned on eight hits and struck out two batters.

Key relievers for Elon include Jared Wetherbee, Brandon Justice and Sean Byrnes. The Phoenix have a team ERA of 3.93 in their 110.0 innings of work. Wetherbee has made five appearances, earning a 1-0 record and a save in 7.2 innings of work. He’s struck out 13 hitters and allowed just one earned run. Justice has made seven appearances, earned a 1.69 ERA in 10.2 innings of work. He’s truck out eight hitters and allowed just two earned runs. Byrnes has made three appearances against UNCG in his career. This season, he’s appeared in four games, logging 7.1 innings with four strikeouts.

The Phoenix offense hits at a .225 average, led by Ryne Ogren. The junior infielder leads the team with a .372 (16-for-43) average and 15 RBI. Ogren has had just one extra base hit while drawing 10 walks and striking out just three times. Cam Devanney has started 11 games, hitting at a .263 (10-for-38) average. He’s connected for five extra base hits and leads the Phoenix with a pair of home runs.
