GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s and women’s track and field resumes its indoor season after more than a month-long break with the JDL New Year College Kick-Off Sunday at 10:00 a.m. The Spartans return to the site of their first meet of the season, the JDL FastTrack in Winston-Salem, where they hosted the UNCG Early Bird Duals on Dec. 3.
UNCG will look to carry over the strong showing from their only home meet of the season into 2018. On the men’s side four runners registered top-10 finishes in their respective events. Weston Clayton (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) garnered fifth place in the 800-meter run by clocking a 2:02.89 and Trelek Jones (Lynchburg, Va./Wake Forest) was eighth with a 2:05.34. Luke Sumerford (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) placed fifth in the men’s mile with a time of 4:28.11, and William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) (9:24.41) finished 10th in the 3,000-meter.
On the women’s side Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) was the top-finisher in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.14, and India Godlock (Polk County, N.C./Polk County) was right behind her for second at 2:25.13. Malea Smith (Davidson, N.C./William Amos) (2:29.11) placed fourth, Kelsey Barrett (Hunstville, Ala./Buckhorn) (2:30.82) was seventh, Kassidy Dill (Milford, Maine/Orono) (2:34.07) finished ninth and Kayla Wetherell (Youngsville, N.C./Franklington) (2:35.18) was 10th.
Ariana Garcia (Beulaville, N.C./East Duplin) finished fifth in the 3,000-meter at 5:46.36, and Lefler McManus placed 10th in the mile with a 10:48.56. Dill, Smith, Josie McGee (Apex, N.C./Apex) and Olivia Rothenburg finished ninth in the 4x400-meter relay at a time of 4:28.74.
This meet is the second of six meets at the nearby JDL FastTrack. The Spartans will compete nearby at the Wake Forest Invitational on Jan. 20-21 and return to JDL FastTrack for the JDL College Dual Meet Madness on Sunday, Jan. 28.
