Cross Country Heads To ECU Pirate Invitational Friday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action Friday afternoon as the Spartans travel to the East Carolina for the Pirate Invitational at Lake Kristi. The women’s team will send eight runners into the field while the men’s program well be represented by seven Spartans.
The meet includes UNCG, East Carolina, N.C. State, Duke, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, Elizabeth City State, Saint Augustine, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Winthrop and Norfolk State. The women’s program will run on the 6,000-meter course at 5:30 p.m. while the men’s program will run the 8,000-meter course at 6:05 p.m.
The Spartans are coming off the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. The UNCG women’s program ran the 5,000-meter race at Notre Dame so this week’s 6,000-meter course will be its longest distance of the year. Sophomore Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) was the Spartans’ top finisher at the Joe Piane, placing 42nd overall in the Gold race with a time of 18:14.9.
The men’s program ran the 5-mile distance at the Joe Piane Invitational and will run the 8,000-meter course Friday. Junior William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) led the Spartans in the 5-mile race last time out with a personal-best time of 26:04.20, placing 60th overall. Sandin trimmed 17 seconds off his previous 5-mile top time, set in 2015 at the same event. Freshman Juan Rodriguez posted the Spartans’ second-best time of the day with a 27:47.1, placing 133rd overall.
