GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball opened its fall world series last night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The intrasquad scrimmage pits Gold vs. Navy with Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) and Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) acting as the captains and general managers for each team.

Wantz’s Gold squad took a 7-1 lead in the two-day, running score, world series, with several newcomers contributing to the early lead.

A few rookies helped give the Gold squad the early lead. Freshman Greg Hardison (Greenville, N.C./JH Rose) finished the first day 4-for-5, with Coleman Sawyer (Greenville, N.C./JH Rose) adding a 2-for-4 performance with a double. Junior Jake Mayhew (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) threw 3.0 innings in relief, striking out four hitters. Freshman Jack Ponder (Candler, N.C./Enka) came on in a bases loaded, no out situation and stranded the runners. In total, Ponder threw 1.2 innings striking out three hitters.

For the Blue squad, Austin Embler (Southern Pines N.C./Pinecrest) went 2-for-4. After missing all but two games last season, Kusz stepped in and went 1-for-2 with a walk. Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) worked 1.1 innings, striking out a pair of batters on the first day.

The Navy and Gold are back again Thursday evening at 5:20 for the final day of the intrasquad scrimmage. The Navy team will look to erase the six-run deficit.
