Bettle & Kenkel Lead The Way for Women's Golf On Day One Of Starmount
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman women’s golfers Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) and Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) are tied for 13th place overall to lead the Spartans after day one of the Starmount Forest Fall Classic hosted by UNCG at the Starmount Forest Country Club. The third and final round will be played Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The Spartans will begin from holes No. 5-8 and live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans as a team are tied for fourth overall in the 12-team field with a 34-over par 610 score. UNCG posted back-to-back rounds of 305 and are tied with William and Mary. The Spartans are also just seven strokes out of second place (Marshall) and one shot out of third place (Winthrop). Campbell holds the overall lead with a 3-over par 579 (291-288) while Annelie Sjoholm of Campbell has the individual lead at 1-under par 143 (73-70) as the only golfer under par in the first 36-holes.
Bettle and Kenkel are tied for 16th place at 7-over par 151 after two rounds. Bettle opened with a 5-over par 77 in round one before coming back with a 2-over par 74 in round two. She ranks second in the entire field with eight birdies on the day to go along with 16 pars. She ranks 11th in the field in par-5 scoring at 2-under par.
"It is always tough to play 36-holes, but I am very happy that I could shoot lower in the second round today," Bettle said. "I actually collected most of my sscore on only two holes today and the other ones were very solid. I made eight birdie today, which helped me keep my score together. Our performance as a team today was solid, but I am sure we can go up in the rankings tomorrow."
Kenkel posted an opened round of 3-over par 75 in round one before carding a 4-over par 76 in round two. She recorded five birdies and 20 par scores in the first two rounds of the tournament.
"I was happy with how I played today," Kenkel said. "I only had a few mistakes and I had some really good shots. I didn't make as man putts as I would've liked, so hopefully they will drop tomorrow. I know our team is ready to grind it our tomorrow and have a solid finish."
Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) finished tied for 19th overall after 36-holes with a 9-over par 153. Dobbins opened with a 5-over par 77 in round one before notching a 4-over par 76 in round two. She finished fourth in the field with seven birdies Monday while recording 15 par scores.
Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) is playing as an individual this week and is in a tie for 24th place overall. Asensio posted rounds of 79-76 to sit at 11-over par 155 as she led the team with 23 par scores in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) finished the day tied for 42nd overall with a 16-over par 160 after carding rounds of 81-79. Freshman Sara Rydman (Taby, Sweden) rounded out the lineup in her first time playing as part of the top-five and posted a 21-over par 165 (76-89) to finish in 51st place.
The Starmount Forest Fall Classic consists of 12 total teams on the par-72, 6,168-yard course. Joining the Spartans in the field includes Boston, Campbell, The Citadel, High Point, Marshall, N.C. A&T, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, William & Mary, Winthrop and Wofford.
