Women's Soccer Tabbed Fourth in SoCon Preseason Poll
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team has been selected fourth in the 2017 Preseason Southern Conference Coaches Poll, voted on by the league’s head coaches and announced Thursday by the conference office.
Defending regular season and tournament champion Samford was unanimously predicted to repeat as conference champ with 81 points, with Furman and ETSU each tying for second with 67 points. UNCG received 56 points, followed by Mercer (50), Chattanooga (40), Western Carolina (34), VMI (22), The Citadel (19) and Wofford (14).
Rising junior Gabbi Charles (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) is one of three defenders bestowed with Preseason All-SoCon laurels, joining Emily McKerlie of ETSU and Furman’s Sanon Williams. Charles started all 20 games in 2016, helping lead the Spartans to seven shutouts.
UNCG finished the 2016 season with a 7-11-2 overall record, including 4-4-1 in SoCon action, good for fifth in the league standings.
UNCG opens its 2017 slate on Saturday with an exhibition contest against Campbell at 7:00 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans head to Tallahassee, Florida Aug. 18 to open the regular season at Florida State.
