Volleyball Begins 2017 Practice Tuesday Morning 08-08-2017

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball opened up its 2017 campaign Tuesday morning with the team participating in its first practice inside Fleming Gymnasium this morning. Head coach Corey Carlin returns 11 letterwinners from the 2016 season that saw UNCG finish 18-13, and 11-5 in the Southern Conference good for the second seed in the SoCon Tournament.

UNCG opens the 2017 season as it hosts UMass-Lowell in the first match of the season. The Spartans host the River Hawks as part of the Spartan Spiketacular. Prior to the start of the UNCG home opener, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons will open their season against the Morgan State Bears.

Key returners for the Spartans include Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange), Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora). Muench is a three-time SoCon honoree, being named Freshman of the Year in 2014, and she’s been a first team All-SoCon selection in her sophomore and junior seasons. Muench has earned 1,133 kills in her career, seventh-most in school history. Muench needs 467 kills to earn the school record.

Gregory comes into the 2017 season after having set single season records in digs per set and the fourth most digs in a season. She earned the SoCon’s Libero of the Year award and was a second team All-SoCon selection. Penner has amassed 2,251 total assists in her two-year career, being named Freshman of the Year in 2015, and was a first team All-SoCon selection in 2016. Penner has also been a standout in the classroom, earning SoCon Honor Roll in her freshman and sophomore seasons.
