GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball head coach Corey Carlin has released the 2017 volleyball schedule. The schedule features 16 home matches, as well as two tournaments inside Fleming Gymnasium. UNCG finished the 2016 season 18-13 and 11-5 in the Southern Conference. The Spartans earned the No. 2 seed in the SoCon Tournament last season, the highest seeding in school history in the SoCon Tournament.
"We are definitely excited about our upcoming schedule this fall.” Carlin stated, “The preseason portion is very balanced and will provide us with several opportunities to determine our rotational strengths while playing against some of the top teams in the country. The goal is always to be playing quality volleyball with a lot of confidence when league play starts in mid-September and this preseason schedule will prepare us very well for that.”
The Spartans open the schedule at home, hosting the Spartan Spiketacular, Aug. 25th-26th. UNCG will welcome the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, the Morgan State Bears as well as the UMass-Lowell River Hawks for the Spiketacular. Wake Forest and Morgan State will begin the tournament at 4:30 p.m. inside Fleming Gym before the host Spartans take the floor for the first time of the season against UMass-Lowell at 7:30 p.m. The Demon Deacons and River Hawks will begin the Saturday schedule at 10:30 a.m. before UNCG will play Morgan State at 1:30 p.m. The Bears are back in action against UMass-Lowell at 4:30 pm. before UNCG wraps up the tournament against Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
After hosting the Charlotte 49ers at 7 p.m. Aug. 29th, UNCG partners with North Carolina A&T to host the Spartan-Aggie Invitational Sept. 1-2. UNCG has won the last three Spartan-Aggie Invites. UNCG opens the schedule against Presbyterian Friday night at 7 p.m. inside Fleming Gym. The Spartans head across town to take on the Aggies Saturday morning at 11 a.m., before hosting the Delaware State Hornets at 7 p.m.
The Spartans hit the road for the first time of the season the following weekend, as they head to Gainesville, Fla. to participate in the University of Florida Tournament Sept. 8-9. UNCG will place the host Florida Gators Friday night, before playing Michigan State and American Saturday. Game times for the Florida Tournament have yet to be announced.
Following the trip to Florida, UNCG partners with High Pont and Elon to host Navy for another tournament before beginning Southern Conference play. UNCG will host High Point Friday night at 7 p.m. before heading to Elon for a match at 11 a.m. Saturday morning. The Spartans finish the weekend action against the Navy Midshipmen at 4 p.m. in the final match of the tournament.
UNCG begins the Southern Conference portion of the schedule Sept. 22nd in Johnson City, Tenn. against the ETSU Buccaneers at 7 p.m. before heading over to Chattanooga Saturday to play the Mocs at 6 p.m.
The Mercer Bears and the Samford Bulldogs will make the trip to Greensboro for a weekend series against the Spartans. UNCG and Mercer will play September 29th at 7 p.m. before taking on the Bulldogs at 5 p.m. on the 30th.
The Spartans hit the road for the next three matches, heading to Wofford, Oct. 6th at 6 p.m., Furman Oct. 7th at 2 p.m. in Greenville, S.C. and wraps up the trip in Cullowhee, N.C. against the Western Carolina Catamounts at 6 p.m. Oct. 11th.
The Citadel, ETSU and Chattanooga come into Fleming Gymnasium for the next three matches. The Citadel match will be played Oct. 13th at 6 p.m., before hosting ETSU at 7 p.m. Oct. 20th and Chattanooga at 5 p.m. on Oct. 21st.
UNCG is back on the road the following weekend, heading to Samford and Mercer. The Bulldogs and Spartans will play at 8 p.m. on Oct. 27th and will head to Macon, Ga. Oct. 28th to take on the Bears at 3 p.m.
The Blue and Gold is back home for three straight matches against Furman, Wofford and Western Carolina the following week. UNCG and Furman take the floor at Fleming Gym on Nov. 3rd at 7 p.m. before hosting the Terriers at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4th. The Spartans close out the home schedule against the Catamounts Nov. 8th at 7 p.m.
The regular season finishes up in Charleston, S.C. against The Citadel at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11th.
The Southern Conference Tournament, hosted by Western Carolina, will take place Nov. 17-19 in Cullowhee with game times to be determined by seeding.
“We were very deliberate in trying to schedule more home matches this fall, which will allow a less stressful beginning to the academic school year for our players with fewer missed classes.” Carlin continued, “It also allows us to take even more advantage of the tremendous home atmosphere we have in Fleming Gym. Playing sixteen times at home, the most we will have played since 2012, will give us a huge competitive advantage and reward our outstanding fan base with more opportunities to see great volleyball at UNCG."
