GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) dominated The Citadel Bulldogs from start to finish helping UNCG earn an 8-2 victory on Senior Day.  Frisbee earned his first complete game as the Spartans improved to 29-19 overall and 12-8 in Southern Conference play.  The Citadel falls to 15-31 overall and 6-14 in SoCon action. UNCG honored its five senior players and its senior student manager in a pregame ceremony.

“(Matt) Frisbee was in total command today.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “He was really good out of the gate and carried that over through his performance.  He allowed us to open it up in the fourth.  We had a lot of good at bats in a row, and some of those walks in there, our guys were disciplined enough to lay off those pitches and get on base to set up the big inning. We had eight or nine quality at bats in a row, a walk and a hit by pitch is important in those innings.  Tripp (Shelton)'s base hit drove in two with two outs and that was a key hit to extend the lead. A lot of times in this game, that big inning is the difference.  Today, you saw that.”

“After the fourth, Frisbee went back out and really pitched with his fastball and slider early then started to work in his changeup in the middle of the game.” Jarrett continued, “(Ben) Spitznagel made some really nice plays out in right field.  JoJo (Underwood) had a good day and its nice to see JoJo go 3-for-3 today and handle four or five balls at third and he did a nice job.  It's a good win for us and hopefully we can come out tomorrow and take the series.”

Frisbee logged his first career complete game Saturday afternoon.  The sophomore went the full 9.0 innings, allowing just four hits, two runs, both earned, walked one batter and struck out seven hitters.

The Spartans used seven hits to earn the victory.  Senior JoJo Underwood (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC) led the way with a 3-for-3 performance with two runs scored and an RBI. Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) added a 2-for-3 performance and scored a run. Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) finished 1-for-4 with a two RBI single.  Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run.

UNCG took advantage of five free bases to score six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Back-to-back walks led off the inning before a single from Embler scored the first run.  Another set of back-to-back walks scored a run and Ryan Clinch (Jamestown, N.C./Brunswick CC) was hit by a pitch to bring in another run.  Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) ground out to first base with the bases loaded to score one and put two in scoring position.  Shelton singled back up the middle to score to and put the Spartans up 6-0 after four innings.

The Citadel cut into the Spartan lead in sixth inning, plating two runs on a Jonathan Sabo double.

UNCG tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.  With runners on the corners, Spitznagel was caught in a run down put avoided the tag long enough to score Underwood from third.

The Blue and Gold added another run in the eighth.  Trejo singled and hustled to second when The Citadel centerfielder bobbled the play. After taking third on a sacrifice bunt, Trejo scored when Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) ground out to shortstop to bring in one and push the lead to 8-2.

The Spartans and Bulldogs wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
