Friday's Game Moved to 2 p.m. as Baseball Hosts The Citadel in Weekend Series
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball returns home for the first time in 27 days Friday afternoon as the Spartans host The Citadel Bulldogs in a three-game Southern Conference series beginning Friday. UNCG and the Bulldogs are scheduled to play Friday at 2 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday's game was bumped up due to inclement weather in the forecast of Friday's game.
Saturday's contest will be Senior Day for UNCG. The five Spartan seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Saturday will also be Military Appreciation Day. UNCG will commemorate the occasion with red white and blue UNCG caps. Fans will be able to purchase these caps on the day of the game at the merchandise tent on the concourse of the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

A Little History -- The Citadel
The Spartans and Bulldogs have played 64 times in school history. The Bulldogs lead the series at a 35-29 mark. Last season, the two teams met in Charleston, with the Spartans coming away with the series victory. The last meeting in Greensboro featured UNCG taking two of three games from the Bulldogs, but The Citadel got the last laugh, knocking off the Spartans in the SoCon Tournament.
Scouting the Spartans
UNCG comes into the series having dropped two of three games to the VMI Keydets in Lexington, Va. last weekend. UNCG fell in the first two games before taking the series finale, 8-5. UNCG has dropped just two of the its last 10 series. After losing the series to Wofford, UNCG came out to defeat Ohio State and Mercer, both on the road.
Ben Spitznagel - Spitznagel has made 40 starts this season, hitting at the lead off, or number two spot in the order. He hits at a .353 average and owns a .429 on-base percentage. He has stolen 12 bases and has gone for extra bases 11 times. He is second on the team with 38 runs scored.
Caleb Webster - The freshman standout is fourth in the country with a .411 batting average in 40 games this season. The freshman leads the team with 13 doubles. His 37 RBI is third-best on the team and scored 34 runs. He has hit in the second, fifth and sixth spots in the order.
Andrew Moritz - Moritz has started 45 games in center field this season. The sophomore has a .397 career batting average which ranks as the best batting average in school history. Moritz is currently fourth in the country with six triples this season. The sophomore has scored a team-high 49 runs this season and has stolen a team-best 13 bases.
Cesar Trejo - Trejo leads the team with eight home runs this season and has driven in 47 runs. A D1baseball.com Freshman All-American and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2016, Trejo hits at a .301 average this season in 40 games. The sophomore has a .569 slugging percentage having hit ten doubles and a pair of triples. Trejo has hit as the cleanup hitter or fifth spot of the batting order this season.
Michael Goss - Goss hits at a .333 average this season and has driven in 40 runs. In the victory over VMI on Sunday, Goss went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run, four RBI and a run scored.
He saw his 15-game hit streak snapped on Friday night at Ohio State, but has recorded a hit in 33 of 40 games this season. Goss's total of six home runs this season is second-most on the team and he owns a team-best .547 slugging percentage.
Tripp Shelton - Shelton provides sneaky pop from the shortstop position. Shelton has hit five home runs, all within the 16 games. Shelton has hit three home runs in each of his first two seasons. The junior has made 120 career starts at shortstop and has helped turn 20 double plays.
Bryce Hensley - Will be making his 13th start of the season, sixth on Friday night. He racked up a season-high 13 strikeouts in a 6-1 victory over Princeton. Hensley has earned five quality starts and has struck out at least two hitters in every appearance. When Hensley goes 6.0 innings, UNCG is 11-0.
Matt Frisbee - Frisbee has started every game in his UNCG career, making 12 starts this season. The sophomore has logged a team-high 68.2 innings, and has thrown in 137.1 innings since arriving in Greensboro. UNCG has gone 18-9 in Frisbee's starts and has recorded 105 strikeouts for his career.
Dan Loats - Loats has worked himself into the weekend rotation and will be starting his sixth Sunday contest of the season. Earlier this season, Loats worked as the midweek starter and made relief appearances in two games. Loats has gone at least 4.2 innings in his last eight appearances, with two quality starts mixed in. He struck out a career-best nine in 5.0 innings against Wofford.
Andrew Wantz - Wantz has made a team-high 20 appearances on the season. The right-hander has gone 5-4 with four saves in 55.1 innings of work. He has struck out 55 hitters this season and has 188 strikeouts in his career. Wantz works in any tough situation needed and has earned four saves this year.
Jack Maynard - Maynard was a late addition to the bullpen after serving as the Friday night starter for the first seven weeks. Maynard has made ten bullpen appearances, allowing four earned runs in that time. In three appearances last week, Maynard threw 6.0 innings, striking out eight hitters and spreading around six hits.
Brandon Stephens - Stephens has worked in 14 games, making one start this season. The freshman threw in two games last week. He logged a scoreless inning at Elon, striking out two batters in an inning of work. Against VMI, the freshman threw 2.0 innings in UNCG's 8-5 victory. Stephens induced a 5-4-3-2 triple play against the first batter he faced in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Scouting the Bulldogs
The Citadel enters this weekend having taken its second Southern Conference series of the year against the ETSU Buccaneers in Charleston, S.C. The Bulldogs sport a 2-13 record on the road, having earned a pair of midweek road victories over Charleston Southern and Samford. The Citadel currently sits in eighth place in the SoCon standings, leading ETSU by one game.
William Kinney - Kinney has started all 44 games he's played in this season, hitting at a .241 average. He has scored 27 runs and driven in 25 to go with a .347 slugging percentage. The shortstop has stolen a team-best eight bases this season and has hit 10 doubles, also leading the team.
Taylor Cothran - Cothran has played in 43 games, making 40 starts this season. Cothran has scored 25 runs and drove in 21 runs, hitting at a .257 average. The outfielder has stolen one base and has hit eight doubles on the year.
Jonathan Sabo - The junior leads the Bulldogs with a .318 average and has hit 10 home runs this year. He leads the team with 28 RBI and 42 runs scored. His .543 slugging percentage is also tops on the squad. He has stared in all 44 games this year.
Joe Sabatini - Sabatini hits at a .242 average having started in all 44 games this year. He has hit seven home runs, six doubles and a triple while driving in 23 runs. The utility player has scored 19 runs and owns a .422 slugging percentage.
Ben Peden - Peden is second on the squad with a .264 average in 37 starts this season. He has hit five home runs with six doubles while driving in 25 RBI. The first baseman owns a .429 slugging percentage and has a .358 on-base percentage.
