Jonathan Brightwell Named SoCon Player of the Month For April
GREESNBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman men's golfer Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Month for April. Brightwell becomes the first Spartan since J.D. Bass in April of 2007 to earn SoCon Player of the Month honors and just the third Spartan in program history to earn the honor (Andy Bare, two times 2004).
Brightwell averaged a league-best 71.0 strokes per round in April over the final three tournaments of the year, earning SoCon Player of the Week accolades the last two weeks of the season. He set a new career-high in each of his last three events of the year, placing 19th at Irish Creek, improving that to seventh at the Wolfpack Spring Open before finishing tied for first at the Southern Conference Championships.
Brightwell finished 19th at Irish Creek with an even-par 213 on the par-71 course with rounds of 71-70-72. He closed out the regular season with a seventh place showing at the Wolfpack Spring open with a career-best 208. He tied the UNCG single-round record with a 63 in the second round of the Wolfpack, the lowest round of any golfer in the SoCon this year.
Brightwell was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year after his play at Pinehurst #9, finishing at 2-over par 218. He finished the SoCon Championships tied for first place overall before falling in the first round of a playoff. He was named to the All-SoCon Team and was member of the league's All-Freshman Team.
