Women’s Golf Finishes Round One In 13th Place At Clover Cup 03-17-2017

GREESNBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team posted a 19-over par 307 in round one of the Clover Cup hosted by Notre Dame in Mesa, Ariz., at the Longbow Golf Course Friday. The Spartans are in 13th place overall heading into round two Saturday where UNCG will have tee times from hole No. 10 between 8:50-9:30 a.m. (MST). Live scoring will be available via

The Spartans hold a 3-stroke lead over Indiana and a 15-stroke lead over IUPUI heading into round two. Florida State holds the overall lead after a 9-under par 279 while Arizona State is second at 7-under par 281. Courtney Tibiletti of Houston and Jolienne Soo of Oklahoma are tied for the individual lead with a 6-under par 66.

Freshman Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) led the Spartans in round one with a 4-over par 77 to sit in 42nd place. Dobbins recorded a team-high 14 par scores, including eight on her back nine (Holes 1-9), and birdied hole No. 16.

“I am so excited to be out here in Arizona, the weather and course are amazing,” Dobbins said. “My putting and short game today was what got me through the round. Overall, I think as a tea we have put ourselves in a good position. I can’t wait to see what the next two rounds bring.”

The Spartans have three players tied for 48th overall at 5-under par 77 in junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba), sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) and freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium).

Kershaw posted nine pars and recorded two birdies on holes No. 4 and 14. Asensio was second on the team with 11 par scores while notching birdies on holes No. 3 and 15. Tichy had the highlight of the day as she posted an eagle-2 on the par-4 hole No. 8, which sits at 268-yards.

Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) rounds out the lineup with a 12-over par 84 while senior Emily Kurey (Alpharetta, Ga./Louisville) carded an 18-over par 90 playing as an individual.

“Personally, today was not my best golf, but I was happy with the way I was able to battle back on the back nine,” Powers said. “I am extremely proud of the way my teammates played out there today and I am exited to see what we can do tomorrow.”

Joining the Spartans in the 15-team field includes Notre Dame, Arizona State, Cincinnati, FIU, Florida State, Houston, Indiana, IUPUI, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, TCU, UNCG, Vanderbilt.
