Softball Utilizes the Long Ball to Claim Gate City Supremacy over North Carolina A&T 03-16-2017

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG smacked three home runs Thursday afternoon on the way to a 10-3 victory over inter-city foe North Carolina A&T at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex.

Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) garnered the win to improve to 10-6. The right tossed five complete innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. Kylie Bouplon (Wilson, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) came on in relief to throw two innings, holding the Lady Aggies off the board and surrendering just a single hit while striking out three.

The Spartans didn’t wait long to get on the board, plating three runs in the top of the first. After Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) reached on an error and Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) laced a double to right-center, Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) launched a homer to right-center to give the Spartans an early three-run lead.

The Lady Aggies got one back in the top half but the Blue and Gold went right back work in the second to score another pair. Hagan Kiser (Asheboro, N.C./Southwestern) led off the frame with a solo shot over the wall in center field McClaskey brought home Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) from third with a sacrifice fly.

NC A&T pulled within two with a run apiece in the third and fourth innings. However, UNCG made sure to stop the budding momentum quickly.

Back-to-back doubles by McClaskey and Cubbage to open the fifth scored a run for UNCG and freshman Kayleigh Willis (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) tacked on two more with a two-run dinger to right-center.

With a healthy lead already in hand, the Spartans capped the game with two more runs for good measure in the seventh. Gontram scored on a fielding error in center field and Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) came home on a sacrifice fly by Kiser.

The Spartans get right back to it tomorrow, returning home to the UNCG Softball Stadium Friday to open a three-game series with Elon at 4:30 p.m. All three games will be streamed live on YouTube.
