Women's Soccer Hosts Charlotte in 2014 Home Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a full preseason slate, the UNCG women’s soccer team kicks off the 2014 season with a home game against Charlotte Friday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Admission to the game is FREE all season long and the first 50 students will receive a drawstring backpack packed with UNCG customized items. Every drawstring backpack will contain different items so don’t miss your chance to be one of the first 50 to claim. Must present a valid student ID.

Also the first 50 fans in attendance will receive a coupon for one free hotdog at the game.

In the Southern Conference preseason poll, the Spartans were predicted to finish third and sophomore defender Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda’s Collegiate) was selected to the Preseason All-SoCon team. UNCG is hoping to build upon a solid 10-6-4 record last season.

Junior Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) was UNCG’s leading scorer last season, putting home six goals and one assist. Lone senior Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) was second on the team with four goals and two assists while junior Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tenn./Father Ryan) came in third with three goals and three assists.

Returning on the defensive side are sophomores Kelsi Peters (Burlington, N.C./Walter M. Williams), Nicole Epstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Brown.

Charlotte enters 2014 as the preseason favorite in the Conference USA and has the preseason defensive Player of the Year returning in junior Monica Trickett. Also landing on the preseason all-conference team was senior midfielder Amanda Jones who finished with 10 goals and 23 points, leading the team in both categories. The 49ers lost 2-0 to Wake Forest and tied Gardner-Webb 1-1 in their two exhibitions.

The Blue and Gold will head to Athens, Ga. to face SEC foe Georgia Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. the game will be streamed live on the newly formed SEC Network plus app. Fans can download the Watch ESPN app and is only available to customers whose cable providers carry the SEC Network television channel.

At every UNCG women’s soccer game there will be soccer inflatables with various activities for all ages. Also at every Friday game this season one lucky fan has a chance to win a prize pack simply by tweeting a picture of themselves @UNCGWSoccer with the #letsgoG included in the tweet. The contestants will be chosen at random and the winner will be announced at halftime of the game. Finally one lucky youth team will be invited out to each home women’s soccer game.
