GREENSBORO, N.C. – Already with a couple of practices, the 2014 UNCG women’s soccer team is beginning preparations for the upcoming campaign that will start with an exhibition game on the road against Ohio on Thursday, Aug. 14 at noon.
The Spartans are led by first-year head coach Michaell Coll, who has begun to implement his coaching strategy during the early stages of preseason. Coll inherits a squad that finished third in the Southern Conference last season after going 10-6-4 with a 5-2-3 SoCon record.
The Blue and Gold return seven starters with three all-conference players returning in junior Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin), sophomores Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School) and Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda’s Collegiate). White made second team All-SoCon last season after leading the Spartans with six goals and one assist. Burrows also was a second team All-SoCon honoree after scoring two goals and helping UNCG’s defense earn nine shutouts. Brown landed on the All-Freshman team after scoring three goals with two assists while playing outside back on the defense.
The Blue and Gold officially open the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 22 at home against in-state foe Charlotte at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Two days later, UNCG takes on SEC opponent Georgia at 2 p.m. in Athens, Ga.
