Menís Golf Announces 2014-15 Schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fresh off its first ever NCAA Regional appearance, the UNCG men’s golf program under the direction of 14-year head coach Terrance Stewart has announced a challenging schedule for the 2014-15 season, highlighted by hosting the 10th-annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. The Spartans return three All-Southern Conference sections and all seven members from last year’s team that finished seventh at the NCAA Auburn Regional.
“Our 2014-15 schedule will once again, position our team to play an elite schedule against many SEC, ACC and Big 10 opponents,” Stewart said. “We have excellent tournaments that will take us all across the Southeast, while also returning to Puerto Rico and hosting the prestigious Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. We are excited for the upcoming season and building off the success we had as a program last year.”
Sophomore Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road), the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year, and fellow All-SoCon performers in senior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) and junior Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) lead the Spartans into the season. Additionally, senior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive), junior Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) and sophomore Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) return after all spending time in the starting lineups. Redshirt sophomore William Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) and freshman Joshua Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pine Crest) round out the Spartans’ roster.
The Spartans open the fall season in the Tarheel Intercollegiate at the Finely Golf Course Sept. 12-15, where they finished third as a team last year. UNCG will travel to Richmond, Va., for the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club (Sept. 22-23) in its second tournament where McGlone finished ninth last fall. The Spartans continue their fall routine Oct. 6-7 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate where Jenkins is the defending champion and UNCG placed second as a team last year.
After a trip to Duluth, Ga., for the Auto Trader Collegiate (Oct. 13-14), the Spartans wrap up the fall season hosting the 10th-annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate Oct. 25-26. This marks the third straight year UNCG has hosted the tournament at the Grandover Resort East Course. The Spartans will host 12 teams at the Bridgestone including North Carolina, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Memphis, Notre Dame, VCU, Georgia State, Chattanooga, Marquette, Mercer, South Alabama and William & Mary.
The Spartans open the spring portion of the schedule with a head-to-head contest against Triad rival High Point in Myrtle Beach at the Legends Golf Course Feb. 15. UNCG returns to tournament play in the spring at one of the sport’s premier early-season tournaments at the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue Feb. 22-24 at the Rio Mar-River Country Club. This will mark the fifth time UNCG has played in the Puerto Rico Classic and the second straight year after placing ninth in the challenging field last spring.
The Spartans will play four new tournaments in the spring this season beginning with the Tiger Invitational (March 8-10) at the RTJ at Grand National. UNCG will also travel to the Linger Longer (March 21-22) at Reynolds Plantation, the Old Waverly Collegiate (April 6-7) at Old Waverly Golf Course and the Irish Creek Collegiate (April 11-12) at Irish Creek
The 2015 Southern Conference Championships will again be held in Pinehurst this season with the three-day event running April 19-21 on Pinehurst #9 course (formerly The National).
