GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG cross country head coach Chad Pearson announced the 2014 schedule for the Spartans, which features UNCG hosting the Southern Conference Championships for the first time in program history Oct. 31.

“We are very excited about our fall 2014 cross country schedule,” Pearson said. “As you look at our schedule there are some competitions that we are very accustomed to racing each year, which is great for our student-athletes, but there are also some new competitions I think will get our kids excited about racing.”

The Spartans open the season Aug. 29 with the Wake Forest Relays before taking part in the Elon Invitational Sept. 13. UNCG will travel to the Wolfpack Invitational (Sept. 19) before hosting the Spartan Invitational Sept. 26 in Kernersville.

“We have designed the schedule to allow our teams to not only face great competition at certain meets, but also allow us opportunities during the season to train at a high level,” Pearson said. “Facing that competition will put us in the best position to succeed during the post-season championship period.”

After the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte Oct. 10, the Spartans will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the NCAA Pre-National Invitational Oct. 18 on the same course that will host the National Championship race.

UNCG comes back to North Carolina and hosts the men’s and women’s SoCon Championships Oct. 31 in Kernersville at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex (formerly Beeson Park). It marks the first time UNCG has hosted the SoCon Championships in program history and will consist of a 5,000-meter race for the women and a 8,000-meter race for the men.

“Certainly, the highlight of the schedule is hosting The Southern Conference Cross Country Championships in Kernersville,” Pearson said.  “As a program, we are very excited about the opportunity to race and compete in front of the home crowd.  We certainly want to use this to our advantage and hope to have many UNCG fans come out and support us.”

The 2014 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships will be held Nov. 14 in Louisville, Ky., while the NCAA National Championships will be run Nov. 22 in Terre Haute.
