Volleyball Releases 2014 Schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team will host 12 matches at Fleming Gymnasium as part of its 2014 schedule, released in its entirety Tuesday by school officials. The Spartans will also host the Southern Conference Volleyball Championship for the third time in program history (2001, 2008).
During its SoCon slate, UNCG will face two new opponents in East Tennessee State and Mercer as both schools will join the league for the upcoming season. The Spartans defeated the Buccaneers last year in five sets at the Wake Forest Invitational.
The Blue and Gold kicks off the campaign fairly close to home, traveling to Charlotte for the 49er Invitational Aug. 29-30. UNCG will take on Sacramento State, Morgan State and host Charlotte at Halton Arena. The Spartans continue their non-conference schedule the following weekend, heading north to Lynchburg, Va., for a tournament hosted by Liberty. The field also includes USC Upstate and Howard.
The home portion of the schedule opens Sept. 12-13 as UNCG co-hosts the Spartan-Aggie Invitational will crosstown neighbor North Carolina A&T. The Blue and Gold will entertain Alabama A&M, UMES and A&T inside Fleming Gymnasium during the two-day event.
High Point serves as the first of two midweek non-league foes for the Spartans as UNCG will face off against its local rival Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Millis Center. The Spartans then wrap up pre-conference play against defending SEC champion Missouri and host Miami at the Hurricane Challenge Sept. 19-20.
The Blue and Gold begins league play Sept. 26-27 on the road, battling Western Carolina and Mercer before traveling to East Tennessee State and Furman Oct. 3-4. UNCG’s will welcome Samford, The Citadel, Wofford, Western Carolina, East Tennessee State, Furman, Mercer and Chattanooga to Fleming Gymnasium during its league slate while also making the trip to each SoCon school to complete the double round robin format.
The Spartans will play their final non-conference contest at home Oct. 7, squaring off against former SoCon rival Elon at Fleming Gymnasium.
The 2014 Southern Conference Volleyball Championship, scheduled for Nov. 22-24, will return to Greensboro for the first time since 2008. The top eight teams in the standings will battle it out to determine the league’s automatic qualifier into the 2014 NCAA Volleyball Championship.
