Shaina & Chelsea Sumney Head To NCAA Regionals 05-29-2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior runners and twin sisters Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) head to the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Regionals, this weekend in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted by North Florida. The top 48 times in each distance qualified for the NCAA East Regionals.

Both Shaina and Chelsea will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the last race of the day May 30 at 9:30 p.m. while only Shaina will take part in the 5,000-meter race May 31 at 8:45 p.m. The top 12 finishers in each race will advance to the NCAA National Championships June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.

Shaina posted the 19th fastest time in the steeplechase this season at 10:18.13 on May 4 at the Payton Jordan Invitational. She owns the 40th best time in the 5,000-meter distance, clocking in at 16:26.39 at the Stanford Invitational April 4.

Chelsea earned a spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to run with her twin sister by posting the 44th best time in the region. She clocked in at a time of 10:27.64 at the Virginia Challenge May 9, in her second to last race of the season.
