SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings Sunday to erase UNCG’s 4-3 lead and complete the sweep of the Spartans 8-4 at Russel C. King Field. The Terriers rise to 28-25 overall and 10-13 in Southern Conference while the Blue and Gold falls to 21-24 and 8-13 with three games remaining in the regular season.
Wofford only had five hits in the contest, but plated eight runs thanks in part to three Spartan errors and four hit batters.
Junior Zac MacAneney (Gibsonville, N.C./Virginia Tech) had another solid day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Classmate Brennen James (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central) took the loss for UNCG after giving up four runs (two earned) on just one hit while walking two in 2.1 innings of work. Will Stillman picked up the win in relief, throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
For the third time in as many contests, the Spartans opened up an early lead. UNCG received an RBI single from MacAneney and juniors Hunter King (Mason City, Iowa/Northern Iowa Area CC) and L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai’i/Ohlone College) in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Terriers quickly tied things in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits to make it a 3-3 ball game. The Spartans briefly took the lead back in the top of the sixth on a nice squeeze bunt by freshman Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside), but Wofford exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh and tacked on a score in the eighth to seal the sweep.
UNCG closes out the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at The Citadel.
