GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) roped a walk-off triple to lead the UNCG softball team into the semifinals in a dramatic extra-inning win against Furman, 4-3, late Thursday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans improve to 29-25 and have won two-straight elimination games in the Southern Conference tournament to make the semifinals. UNCG will face No. 1 seed Georgia Southern Friday, May 8 at 12:30 p.m. in another elimination game. Bedwell went 2-for-4 with a RBI triple and a run scored to pace the Blue and Gold at the plate. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) threw six relief innings to earn her 15th win of the season. Hanks allowed only five hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Senior Lauren Collier went seven innings plus and allowed four earned run on seven hits. In the bottom of the second, Furman took an early lead after freshman Andrea Abbatiello hit a two-run home run to give the Paladins a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) lines an RBI single to left field to cut Furman’s lead to 2-1. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) started the inning with a leadoff double to the wall. After a wild pitch, sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) earned a walk to put runners at the corners. Vega drove in her 32nd RBI of the season. After a fly out, pinch hitter Hagan Kiser (Asheboro, N.C./Southwestern) lined a two-run double to left center to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead. The Paladins would not go away scoring on a wild pitch with one out in the sixth inning. Pinch runner Taylor Collins scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Furman would load the bases but Hanks got Taylor Jenkins swinging to keep the game deadlock. Sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) started the dramatic eighth inning with a single and scored the winning run off the triple from Bedwell.
