GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s track and field program opened the 2014 outdoor season this weekend at the annual UNCW Seahawk Invitational held at the Greene Track & Field Complex in Wilmington. Both programs posted strong finishes in the 800-meter distances while the women’s team notched a pair of top three showings on the weekend.
Men’s Track Senior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) highlighted three Spartans in the top six of the 800-meter race as he won the distance Saturday. Alston turned in a time of 1:55.72 in the finals to win the race while also posting a 1:53.00 in the preliminary heat, the fastest time of the day. Sophomore Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) placed fifth overall with a time of 1:56.88 while junior Brandon Cain (Graham, N.C./Coker College) finished sixth in a personal-record time of 1:58.94.
Women’s Track Senior Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was the Spartans’ top finisher on the women’s side, placing second in the 800-meter dash. Sumney turned in a personal-record time of 2:14.86 to finish only four 100ths of a second behind Savana Weller of North Dakota at 2:14.82.
Sophomore Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) also turned in a personal-record time in the 800-meter race, clocking in at 2:20.99 to finish sixth overall. Sophomore Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) rounded out the Spartans in the top 15 as she placed 13th overall with a time of 2:26.71.
Senior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) turned in a third place finish in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:52.28. Tereza Novonta of Elon won the event with a time of 4:24.44. Rounding out the top Spartans on the weekend was senior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) who placed 10th overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.22.
The Spartans return to the track March 21-22 at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem.
