Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 to ECU

GREENSBORO, N.C.-The UNCG women’s tennis team fell to 0-3 on the season after a close battle with the Pirates of East Carolina. Four singles matches came down to tiebreakers, but the final score went in favor of the Pirates despite a battle from the Spartans.

East Carolina earned a point after winning all three doubles matches. Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./Clover) took on Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca at the No. 1 doubles spot and fell 6-4.  Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./ Indian Rocks Christian) and Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) also fell 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to Maria Storozheva and Dana Gray. Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Asha Iyengar (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) lost 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to Melis Tanik and Emily Groeneveld.

The singles matches had numerous close matches. Falcon took on Tanik at No.1 singles and won the first set 7-6 (7-2) after a tiebreaker. Falcon lost take set two 7-5. Tanik prevailed in the tiebreaker, 11-9.

At No. 2 singles, Gammie fell 6-3 to Castro in the first set but forced a tiebreaker in set two. Castro took control of the tiebreaker, 7-2.

Franco fell at No. 3 singles to LaDuca 6-4, 6-1.

Grinberg earned one of the two points for the Spartans at No. 4 singles but it took a tiebreaker to do it. Grinberg took set one over Groeneveld 6-4, but Groeneveld took set two 6-3. Yet, Grinberg took the tiebreaker, 10-5.  

Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/ Newcastle Under Lyme School) earned the Spartans another point at No. 5 singles. She defeated Marla Storozheva in the first set 6-3 but fell 6-4 in set two. Ellis won the point after earning a 10-6 tiebreaker win.

Sutherland played at the No. 6 singles spot and yet another tiebreaker was forced. After falling to Dana Gray 6-4 in set one, Sutherland bounced back in a big way to take set two 6-0. Yet, it was Gray who was able to finish it out in the tiebreaker with a 10-5 win.

The Spartans have a quick turnaround as they take on the Spartans of USC Upstate Sunday at noon. The match will be held at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro.
