ELON, N.C. – Freshman Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) went 2-0 leading UNCG men’s tennis on Day One at the Elon invitational Friday night at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Wilkins defeated NC Central’s K. Hairston, 6-0, 6-0 before earning a tough three set win against G. Jain from Tennessee Tech, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) earned a straight sets win against J. Ljungdahl (NC Wesleyan), 6-4, 6-0. Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) took down UNC Asheville’s J. Swindler, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) fell to NC Central’s Gerasimov, 6-3, 6-2. Classmate James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) lost in straight sets to S. Patrick (Winthrop), 6-1, 6-1. Senior Jimmy Roueche (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) dropped a straight sets match to Ismael Sanchez (Elon), 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, Dougherty and Mack defeated Georgia Southern’s Osorio/De Groof, 8-3. Roueche and Murray fell to Gerasimov/East (NC Central), 8-5. Wilkins and Smith picked up an 8-3 win against NC Central’s Donatien/Kienka.
UNCG will compete in one more fall tournament before beginning the spring season in January: the Winthrop Fall Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on Nov. 1-3.
