Women's Soccer Falls to Southern Conference Foe Furman 10-11-2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team dropped a tough Southern Conference game to Furman, 3-0, Friday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

“I want to give credit to Furman who has a bunch of special players who will punish you on mistakes,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “Jamie Simmons was fantastic tonight making the saves she needs to make to keep us in the game. I am proud of our team for continuing to keep fighting.”

The Spartans fall to 7-5-1, 2-1-1 on the season while Furman continues its 10-game unbeaten streak improving to 10-2-1, 4-0 in SoCon action.

The Paladins struck quickly taking a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the contest after Jamie Alexander scored from inside the box off a pass from Carlie Couch.

UNCG settled in after that gaining some momentum on a header shot from sophomore Ashley Eddleman (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) that went just wide.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) kept the game close making two key saves in the first half. The Spartans finished the half with four shots as sophomore Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) led the way with two attempts.

Simmons opened the second half with back-to-back big time saves to keep the game at 1-0. In the 55th minute, Stephanie DeVita fired a shot on frame when Simmons made a diving stop to her right.

Just two minutes later, DeVita broke through inside the box and scored her league-leading 10th goal of the season to make it 2-0 Furman.

The Paladins pushed their lead to 3-0 after Alexander scored her second goal of the game off a rebound into an empty net.

In the 71st minute, Fishman had a chance that hit the crossbar falling just short of a goal for UNCG. In the 87th minute, Alexis Thomas (Bishop, Ga./Oconee County) put a shot on goal that hit the crossbar again.

Simmons finished with six saves in net for UNCG. Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) finished with three shots. The Blue and Gold attempted 12 shots in the contest.
