ELON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team finished play at the Elon Invitational Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
In singles, junior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) won in straight sets against Western Carolina’s Sarah Ruiz, 6-4, 6-0 in the 13th place match.
Freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) won a tight three set match against Margaret Boyette (Furman), 0-6, 6-4, 10-7. Franco won the last two sets to earn her second win of the tournament. Classmate Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) earned her first collegiate victory with a straight sets win against Mia Ramic (NCCU), 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) fell in a third set tiebreaker against Charleston Southern’s Angelica Sidorenko, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. Grinberg lost a close tiebreaker 10-8 in the 5th place bracket.
Sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Brittian/Newcastle Under Lyme School) lost a tight three setter against Jill Lewis (UNC Asheville), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-7.
Sophomore Asha Iyengar (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) lost in the B-1 singles flight consolation final to William & Mary’s Jackie Lee, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Classmate Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C./Zebulon B. Vance) won in straight sets against Shanetta Wilkins (Charleston Southern), 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action, Franco and Grinberg picked up an 8-2 victory against UNC Asheville’s Boissevain/McNall in the A-2 doubles flight.
UNCG returns to action at the Charlotte Fall invitational Friday, Sept. 20 in Charlotte, N.C.
