Menís Golf Sits In Third At Tar Heel Intercollegiate Saturday
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team sits alone in third place after the first two rounds of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate Saturday at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill. The Spartans are 6-over 582 after 36 holes and trail North Carolina State (579) and Georgia Tech (564). UNCG will wrap up the two-day event with third round tee times between 9:10-9:46 a.m. with live scoring available at www.golfstatresults.com.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) paced the team as he is tied for fourth place overall with a 2-under par 142. Dixon opened the 2013-14 season with a 3-under par 69 in round one and held a share of the lead after his first 18 holes. He was up and down over his first nine holes, posting three birdies and four bogeys, before closing the round with four birdies on his back nine. He followed that up with a 1-over par 73 in round two and is four shots off the lead held by Georgia Tech’s Seth Reeves.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) made his collegiate debut and sits in a tie for 12th place overall after 36 holes with a 1-over par 145. Jenkins began his career with a 1-over par 73 and followed that with an even par-72. He posted eight birdies in his first two rounds while recording six bogeys and a triple bogey.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) posted a 2-over par 146 to sit in a tie for 24th place. He opened the day with a 4-over par 76 but rebounded with a 2-under par 70 in round two, the Spartans’ low score for the second round. He recorded four birdies and only two bogeys in his second 18 holes of play.
Rounding out the Spartans’ lineup was junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) with a 5-over par 149 (75-74) and sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) with a 9-over par 153 (77-76). Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) played in his first collegiate event as an individual and went 8-over par 152 (73-79).
Georgia Tech leads the team event with a 12-under par 564 (283-281) while N.C. State is second at 579 (284-295). Seth Reeves and Richy Werenski of Georgia Tech hold down the top two spots individually with 6-under par and 5-under par scores, respectively.
