Men's Golf Announces 2013-14 Schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's golf head coach Terrance Stewart announced a challenging 2013-14 schedule, including the Spartans hosting the ninth-annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at the Grandover Resort. The Spartans return five members of last season's squad that finished fifth at the Southern Conference Championships, while adding a stellar recruiting class to the team.
"Our 2013-14 schedule will once again, position our team to play an elite schedule against many SEC, ACC and Big 10 opponents," Stewart said. "We have excellent tournaments that will take us to Puerto Rico, Florida and Pinehurst while also hosting the prestigious Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. I am looking forward to the upcoming year and expect our team will compete at a high level on a regular basis."
The Spartans are led by reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) and fellow SoCon All-Freshman performer Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams). Additionally, juniors Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) return after spending the past two years in the top-five lineup, while William Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) will battle for a lineup spot after redshirting last season.
The Spartans also add two true freshmen to the team in Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) and Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin). Jenkins recently qualified for the Web.com Rex Hospital Open as an amateur and is the North Carolina Junior Boys Player of the Year. Additionally, Grayson Murray (Raleigh, N.C./East Carolina) joins the program but will have to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules. Murray qualified and played in the 2013 U.S. Open as an amateur.
The Spartans open the fall season in the Tarheel Intercollegaite at the Finely Golf Course Sept. 14-15, before travelling to Richmond, Va., for the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club (Sept. 23-24). Haithcock placed 14th at the VCU Shootout last season in just his second career collegiate tournament. UNCG continues fall play at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate (Oct. 7-8) at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club and the Auto Trader Collegiate (Oct. 14-15) at the Berkeley Hills Country Club.
The Spartans wrap up the fall season hosting the ninth-annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate Oct. 26-27. This marks the second straight year UNCG has hosted the tournament at the Grandover Resort East Course. The Spartans will host 13 teams at the Bridgestone including North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, VCU, Georgia State, High Point, Chattanooga, Memphis, Purdue, Washington State, Iowa State and William & Mary.
The Spartans open the spring portion of the schedule with one of the sport's premier early-season tournaments at the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue Feb. 23-25 at the Rio Mar-River Country Club. Last season's tournament featured nine teams ranked in the Top 20 and will mark the UNCG's fourth appearance in the event (2010, 2011, 2012).
After a three-day tournament at the USF Invitational March 2-4 at the Lake Jovita Country Club, the Spartans return to the state of North Carolina for the challenging Pinehurst Intercollegiate (March 9-11). The tournament is played on Pinehurst No. 8 and No. 2. Coalson notched his highest finish of the season at Pinehurst, placing fourth overall in the strong field.
The Spartans continue the spring season at the C&F Bank Intercollegaite (March 23-25) at the Kingsmill Resort where Dixon placed a season-best 11th last year. UNCG closes out the regular season April 13-14 at the Bancorp Collegiate hosted by Ole Miss. Coalson placed sixth overall at the event last year at the Reunion Country Club.
The 2014 Southern Conference Championships will be held April 20-22 in Pinehurst, N.C., at The National Golf Club. The NCAA Regional will be hosted by N.C. State in Raleigh at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club May 15-17 while the NCAA Championships are held May 27-June 1 at the Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Wichita, Kan.
