UNCG releases 2011 volleyball schedule
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball coach Patrick Nicholas announced his 2011 schedule on Friday that is highlighted by four early season tournaments, two of which the Spartans will host, and 16 home matches.
"It's going be a very challenging schedule that I'm pretty excited about," said Nicholas. "We really upped the toughness of our schedule this season and that will provide some challenges considering we are bringing in seven new girls. The first four weeks are all really good teams and it will be interesting to see how we react when we throw our newcomers into the fire."
The Spartans will start the year with the Blue vs. Gold scrimmage on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium before kicking off the regular season by hosting the UNCG Invitational on Aug. 26-27. UNCG will host Coastal Carolina, Evansville, East Tennessee State and North Carolina A&T over the two-day tournament.
"We added the first-ever UNCG Invitational the very first weekend to kick things off and we have four other teams in it," Nicholas said. "All of the teams are all a lot alike and it will be interesting to see how this tournaments plays out."
A few days later, UNCG will host Wingate for a scrimmage on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. before heading to the George Mason Patriot Invitational on Sept. 3-4. The Spartans will face High Point and George Mason on the first day before wrapping up with a match against Navy on Sunday.
The following weekend, the Spartans will head south to compete in the UCF Tournament on Sept. 9-11 where they will face UCF and Florida Atlantic on the first day. They will match up against Pittsburgh the following day before playing South Florida on Sunday.
UNCG will host its final tournament of the season on Sept. 16-17 in Fleming Gymnasium for the Spartan Spiketacular. On Friday, the Spartans play Memphis at 7 p.m. before facing Howard and Radford on Saturday.
"We will have the Spartan Spiketacular once again this season that will feature some really good teams," Nicholas said. "That will be very exciting and will lead us into the conference this season."
In its final tune-up before conference play, UNCG will make the short trip to North Carolina A&T on Sept. 20 for a 6 p.m. match. It will kick off the Southern Conference portion of its schedule that weekend as the Spartans host Elon on Sept. 23 during Homecoming weekend before playing at The Citadel on Sept. 25.
The Spartans will kick off a three-match homestand on Oct. 1 as they host Western Carolina at 5 p.m. and then face Appalachian State the following day at 5 p.m. They will wrap up the quick homestand on Oct. 4 with a midweek matchup against North Carolina Central at 7 p.m.
UNCG will then hit its longest road swing of the season as it travels to Birmingham, Ala. on Oct. 7 to face Samford at 8 p.m. and then turn around and play at Chattanooga the next night at 7 p.m. The Spartans will return home on Oct. 14 to host Davidson at 7 p.m. and will play Georgia Southern the following evening at 7 p.m.
That will be the final home match for UNCG until Nov. 4 as it hits the road for four matches. The Spartans will start the trip on Oct. 21 at Furman before facing nearby Wofford the next night. The following weekend, they will travel up the mountain to face Appalachian State on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and then play at Western Carolina on Oct. 30.
