GREENSBORO, N.C. – Assistant UNCG softball coach Brittney McKinney is playing professionally with the expansion NY/NJ Comets in the National Pro Fastpitch league this summer. She is currently leading the team with a .400 average in seven games.

The league has four teams in the Chicago Bandits, USSSA Pride, Akron Racers and the NY/NJ Comets. The Bandits and the Pride lead the league with 6-2 records early in the season.

McKinney has played in seven of the first eight games as the team's catcher hitting .400 (8-for-20), which is the fourth-highest batting average in the league. This is her third season playing professionally after starting her first two seasons with the former Carolina Diamonds. McKinney has had three multi-hit games, including a 2-for-3 effort with a RBI against the USSSA Pride back on June 10.

McKinney will be featured on ESPN3 on June 29 when the Comets take on the USSSA Pride for a doubleheader starting at 5:35 p.m. at the Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, Fla. A month later, the two teams will battle again on ESPN2 on July 20 at the Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair, N.J.

In her first season as an assistant coach at UNCG, McKinney helped the Spartans reach the Southern Conference championship game, falling 1-0 in 11 innings against Georgia Southern. The 38 victories mark the most wins in a decade as the Spartans won 38 games in 2003.
