GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro volleyball opened up its 50thanniversary season on Friday evening in victorious fashion, downing North Carolina Central 3-1 at Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans (25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15) head into tomorrow’s action against Presbyterian and Wake Forest 1-0 on the season.
During the four-set victory, UNCG was led in by Maria Esch in kills with 14, while Holly Behrends had a Spartan-best 13 digs.
Three Things To Know
--With the victory, the Spartans have now won three-straight season openers, as they also defeated UMass Lowell in 2017 and Air Force in 2018.
--The victory was UNCG’s 11thagainst North Carolina Central and the 10th-straight in the all-time series.
--Five freshmen made their collegiate debuts in the match, as Hannah Knier, Grey Breen, Camille Anderson, Gabriela McHugh and Elayne Grisbee appeared in the match. McHugh and Grisbee also made their first career starts.
The Spartans will return to the court tomorrow for a pair of matches, hosting Presbyterian at 11 a.m. before concluding the weekend’s action against Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m.
UNCG Volleyball is celebrating 50 years of wonderful memories dedicated to celebrating current and former student-athletes, coaches and staff who have made an impact on our family. The program will be hosting a special celebration the weekend of Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 18.
