GREENSBORO, N.C. – After winning the Southern Conference Championship for the second-straight year, UNC Greensboro men's golf will represent the conference in the NCAA Regionals at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, California. The three-day regional will begin on Monday, May 13 and conclude on Wednesday, May 15.
The top five teams in the three-day tournament – along with the top five teams at the five other regional sites – will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will take place May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
UNCG earned the SoCon's automatic bid after winning the conference tournament last month, finishing 12 strokes lower than second place ETSU. This is the first time in program history UNCG has won the SoCon two-straight times and the fourth time the Spartans will participate in NCAA Regionals since joining the Division I ranks.
This year, UNCG has been led by a trio that's currently on pace to have the three best stroke averages in a single season in school history. Sophomore Nick Lyerly, who finished tied for first place in the SoCon Championship before falling in a two-hole play, leads the team with a 71.55 stroke average. Additionally, Lyerly also won the Individual Championship at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate in February.
Junior Jonathan Brightwell, the top ranked player in the SoCon in both Golfstat and Golfweek, is second on the team in stroke average at 71.76. He's recorded eight top-15 finishes so far this year.
Senior Bryce Hendrix, meanwhile, is third in stroke average at 71.82. His final collegiate season to date has been highlighted by a record-breaking performance at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, as he set new school records for 18-hole and 54-hole performance along with the best score against par and the most birdies in a 20-under finish.
All three were named to the All-SoCon Team.
Additionally, junior Grant Powell has been a member of five tournament-winning teams since transferring to UNCG and sophomore Zack Swanson was named to the All-SoCon Tournament Team last month after finishing in third place, his best career placement.
