COLUMBIA, S.C. – UNC Greensboro softball (25-18) dropped a doubleheader to No. 15/21 South Carolina (34-12) 6-3 and 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Beckham Field.
The Gamecocks scored five unanswered runs to come back for the victory in game one. South Carolina had three homers for four runs in the fourth inning followed by another solo home run in the next inning.
The Spartans started the game with a 2-0 lead. Delaney Cumbie drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Makenna Matthijs. The bases were loaded with no outs after Marisa Sholtes was hit by a pitch and Gabi Howard got a walk on four-straight balls. Katie Stettler drew a one-out walk for the second run.
The other UNCG run came in the fourth inning when a throwing error by the shortstop allowed pinch runner Monica Pepe to score from second base. Pepe came in for Samantha Lagrama, who drew a one-out walk.
South Carolina scored six runs in the third inning to break a scoreless in the second game on a pair of two-run hits and a two-run homer.
UNCG was able to cut its deficit to two the following inning. Matthijs led off with a double to left field, and Sholtes drew a walk. Both runners scored on a fielding error by the first baseman, and Howard reached third base on the play. After Stephanie Bryden walked and advanced to second base on a groundout, Kamryn Graves knocked in the pair of runners on a double down the right field line. The bases were loaded with a pair of walks by Pepe and Cumbie, but all three were left on after a fielder’s choice.
The Gamecocks added three insurance runs with a sac fly and RBI-single in the fifth inning and a leadoff homer in the next inning.
UNCG plays their fourth-straight top-40 RPI opponent with North Carolina coming to Greensboro Wednesday at 6 p.m.
