DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – UNCG’s Roger Rogowski earned his third singles win of the season, but it was Coastal Carolina that came away with the 5-2 team win when the two clashed in Daytona Beach on Saturday, March 9.
Rogowski claimed the lone singles win for the UNCG, which slipped to 3-6 on the season, by virtue of a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Daiki Tanabe, in a meeting of No. 4 seeds.
The Spartans earned their second point of the match with a pair of doubles victories. The first win came as Hugh Knapp / Jack Burkill snagged a 6-3 win over the tandem of Tanabe / Gonzalo Achondo. Teammates Ollie Palmer / Nico Grewe were responsible for the other UNCG doubles win, which came by a 7-5 margin over Lawrence Perrin / Luiz Faria.
Coastal Carolina claimed the battle of No. 2 doubles as Zak Talic / Joel Popov completed a 6-4 victory over Rogowski / Ian Melnik.
The Chanticleers evened the match at 1-1 after Faria grabbed the 6-4, 6-3 victory against Grewe in the battle of No. 1 singles. Popov pushed Coastal Carolina in front as he downed Palmer by margins of 6-2, 6-1.
Rogowski briefly tied the match at two-all, following his singles win, but consecutive victories by Achondo and Pyry Hyrkkonen clinched the Coastal Carolina win. Achondo came through with a 7-6 (4-0), 6-2 victory against Knapp, while Hyrkkonen posted a 6-4, 7-6 (3-0) win against Burkill.
Juan Castellanos provided the final point for the Chanticleers with a 6-1, 6-7 (0-3), 6-4 win against Cooper Wyett.
UNCG returns home next week to face Southern Miss in a non-conference match on Thursday, March 14 at 2 p.m.
