CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC Greensboro softball (9-6) cruised past Fairfield (3-2) 9-1 in six innings in its Carolina Classic Opener Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium. The Spartans hit four home runs in the game, led by a pair of two-run homers by Jasmine Palmer.

UNCG took the lead for good in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Palmer singled to right field, and then Gabi Howard hit her team-high fourth home run of the season to left center.

The Spartans added a run in the next inning. The bases were loaded with one out with three-straight singles by Samantha Lagrama, Monica Pepe and Katie Stettler. Stephanie Bryden hit a sac fly to centerfield to knock in Lagrama.

The next homer was a solo shot to left field by Kayleigh Willis in the third inning.

After Fairfield scored its only run with a solo homer in the fourth inning, UNCG responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Pepe doubled to right field with one out, advanced to third base on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Palmer then hit her first homer of the year to left center.

The Spartans induced the run-rule in the sixth inning. With two outs, Bryden singled to right center, and Palmer hit her second homer to centerfield.

UNCG closes out the tournament Sunday against Maryland at 1 p.m. followed by another game versus George Washington afterwards.

News and Notes

- Bryden (7-3) threw her fifth complete game of the year, allowing one run, one hit and three walks with 11 strikeouts. Bryden has had two 10+ strikeout outings this season and nine in her career.

- 8 Spartans recorded a hit.

- Palmer finished with three runs.

- Lagrama had her first start at first base in her collegiate career, and Stettler did as well in centerfield.
