TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – UNC Greensboro softball (1-3) split a pair of games in the JoAnne Graf Classic Saturday at JoAnne Graf Field, defeating UNCW (1-3) 11-10 before falling to the host school No. 1/3 Florida State (4-0) 8-0 in five innings. The win against the Seahawks was a walk-off, with Makenna Matthijs delivering the game-winning hit with the bases loaded on a single through the left side.
The Spartans trailed 6-0 before tying the game in the bottom of the second inning. Kayleigh Willis led off with a double to left center, and Jordan Gontram was hit by a pitch. With two outs Melanie Darges loaded the bases with a single to centerfield. Monica Pepe drew the first run in with a hit by pitch. Matthijs knocked in two with a single to left field. Jasmine Palmer then tripled down the right field line, and Marisa Sholtes brought home the tying run with a single to left field.
UNCW would claim the lead back with a solo homer the next inning and a two-run homer in the fourth.
UNCG got its first lead in the fifth inning. With pinch-runner Kamryn Graves and Gontram on first and second base, Gabi Howard hit her first collegiate home run down the left field line. Darges then hit a one-out single through the left side followed by a walk by Pepe. Matthijs brought home Darges from second base with a single to left field.
UNCW had tied the game up with its fifth home run of the game in the seventh inning.
In the second game of the day, Florida State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with two RBI-singles and an RBI-double. In the third inning it added a pair of runs with another RBI-single and RBI-double.
The game ended in the fifth inning. Florida State started the inning with back-to-back homers and then had an RBI-groundout.
UNCG closes out the tournament Sunday at 10 a.m. against Iowa State.
News and Notes
- Darges and Matthijs were the only two Spartans to collect more than two hits on the day, as both had four. In the win against the Seahawks, Matthijs went 3-4 with four RBIs and a run while Darges was 3-4 with two runs.
- All four pitchers made an appearance against UNCW. Stiltner started and recorded just one out, allowing three hits, two earned runs and a walk. Hannah Kincer made her collegiate debut and went 3.1 innings with six hits, four earned runs and three walks. Stephanie Bryden recorded the last two outs, both strikeouts, to get the win.
- Bryden started against Florida State and went three innings, giving up nine hits, five runs and no walks with two strikeouts. Stiltner and Kincer also made appearances.
