GREENSBORO, N.C. –UNC Greensboro men’s basketball closed out non-conference play on a high note Tuesday evening, defeating the defending Big South champions Radford 63-58 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

With the victory, the Spartans completed their non-conference schedule with an 11-2 record. The 11 wins are the most non-conference victories in a single season since UNCG transitioned to the Division I level in the early 1990s before joining the Big South and then the Southern Conference.

Additionally, the Spartans are currently riding a four-game winning streak heading into conference play.

In an expected competitive first half, the Spartans and Highlanders fought throughout a competitive 20-minute frame before UNCG was able to take a 34-25 halftime lead after holding Radford to just two points over the final six minutes of action.

The Spartans were hot from three-point land in the first half, making 6-of-12 attempts with senior guard Francis Alonso hitting three shots from downtown. Freshman forward Angelo Allegri also hit back-to-back three pointers that gave UNCG the lead from Radford on two different occasions.

Defensively, UNCG held Radford to just 1-of-9 shooting over the final six minutes. Neither team shot a free throw in the first half.

Radford, however, began the second half on an 21-7 run to get to its biggest lead on the evening, 46-42, with 11:23 remaining. Despite falling behind, UNCG took back the lead with 8:19 left when junior forward Eric Hamilton sank a layup in a congested lane.

Although the lead changed two more times, the Spartans took over the lead for good with 5:48 remaining when Hamilton made a pair of free throws. That lead was cushioned by a late corner three from junior guard Malik Massey.

UNCG will begin conference play this Saturday when the Spartans travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Samford. The Spartans have won their last two conference openers en route to regular season SoCon titles.

Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m EST.
