GREENSBORO, N.C.- UNC Greensboro’s women’s golf team (309-301-306) closed out fall play finishing in eighth place at the Idle Hour Collegiate that took place in Macon, Ga. The Spartans finished five strokes behind sixth place James Madison and six strokes behind fifth place finishers Georgia Southern and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
“Not the finish we were looking to for the fall season,” said Head Coach Janell Howland. “I’m excited for them to take some time and get refreshed. I expect them to come back rested and rejuvenated and ready to work harder in the spring to achieve the goals that they set as a team.”
Sophomore Keri Kenkel (79-71-75) finished tied for 16th place after carding a three-over 75 in the third round. Kenkel birdied three times against six bogeys on Tuesday.
Senior Lexi Kershaw (73-78-75) also finished Tuesday’s round at three-over, as she holed a team-high three birdies during the final 18 holes. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native finished tied for 19th place.
Sophomore Tara Bettle (80-74-77), meanwhile, birdied once on both the front nine and back nine against four bogies and one triple-bogey. She finished tied for 33rd place.
Freshman Hailey Joy (78-78-79) finished tied for 45th place while junior Louisa Tichy (79-80-84) finished in 64th place.
The Spartans’ fall tournament performance was highlighted by a second place finish in the team’s annual home tournament, the Starmount Fall Classic.
UNCG’s next tournament appearance will come on Feb. 25-27, 2019, at the Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Spartans will also participate in the River Landing Classic, Clover Cup and Bryan National before the Southern Conference Championships in late April.
