SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the third consecutive season, UNC Greensboro’s men’s soccer team has advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament, as the Spartans defeated Wofford 1-0 on Saturday evening at Snyder Field in a quarterfinals matchup.

With the victory, the Spartans improved their record this season to 7-8-2.

“Proud of the group for the result tonight,” said Head Coach Justin Maullin. “Wofford gave us a tough challenge tonight. Every game is tough at this point. It wasn't the prettiest performance but we got the result and I'm happy to train these seniors for another week.”

The Spartans took an early advantage in the contest when freshman Jacob Planell netted his team-high fifth goal of the season just four minutes into play.

After UNCG claimed possession of the ball in Wofford’s third of the field, senior defender Josh Masten headed a pass to Planell who headed in the ball past Terriers goalkeeper Shane Berson. In the first half, the Spartans (nine) had almost twice as many shots that Wofford (five) had.

UNCG nearly doubled its lead early in the second half, but a Faisal Almubaslat shot hit off the post to prevent the Spartans from going up 2-0.

In the final seconds, senior goalkeeper Jon Milligan’s heroic diving save stopped Wofford from sending the game into overtime.

The No. 5 seeded Spartans will return to the pitch on Friday to face No. 1 seeded Mercer in Johnson City, Tenn.

Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

In their only meeting this year, UNCG fell to Mercer by a 3-0 decision. The Bears finished the regular season with a 12-3-2 overall record and were 5-1-0 in SoCon play.

The winner of the game will advance to the SoCon Tournament final that will take place on Sunday, Nov. 11.
